The tricky part about flying a drone is when you have to split your focus. Usually, you will have to keep an eye on your bird just so that it doesn’t stray into places where it’s not supposed to. At the same time, you will have to keep up with footage coming from the drone’s camera.

Let’s face it, this is a struggle for many. In some cases, especially high-end productions, two people often gang up to handle the multiple tasks. But for those who do it for fun, this may not sound like a reliable option. All hope isn’t lost though as Epson recently unveiled a simpler and better solution for this.

Of all drone technology manufacturers we know, naming Epson as the creator of smart glasses may just be the last thing you expect to hear in 2017. But what many actually don’t know is that the company did set up a division named Moverio where all focus has been on projection eyewear.
Well, if you thought that’s baffling, wait until you see what this smart glasses can do.

How it works

The package comes with a little black unit that attaches to your controller in a similar way that a smartphone would. With the help of clips, it’s able to stay firm. You will then plug your glasses into the unit and that will be it.

To control the app, just run your finger along the unit and the cursor on your display will start to shift. You will then be able to take pictures or change the settings or perform any of the many DJI app functions.
Nothing really changes when it comes to controlling your drone only that rather than tilting your head down to stare at a phone or tablet, you will stare into the glasses as everything you need, from real-time footage to key flight statistics will all be there, plastered on your display.

Whatever you would normally see on your phone’s display can easily be viewed on the smart glasses’ transparent display.
Design-wise, they are thin and narrow and this could be of benefit to you in many ways. For instance, you can look over your glasses to see your drone or focus on what’s on the display, not to mention that they are easily portable.

Supported Applications

So far, the Moverio BT-300FPV Smart Glasses only work with DJI’s popular GO app, meaning you can’t enjoy this technology yet if you use third-party apps.  But the company has hinted that they are working to create apps that will be used with the glasses.

Sunlight Conditions

Putting in mind many of us often fly our drones over the day, sunlight is a necessary hurdle that we have to deal with. Well, Epson found a way around this by coming up with an extra dark shade. All you have to do is clip it over the front side of your glasses and it will keep away the bright light, enabling to have a clear view of the drone.
So, what really makes Moverio BT-300FPV Smart Glasses special? Well, here’s everything in brief.
  • Great for controlling a drone in small and confined spaces
  • Enables you to perfectly keep your drone within your line of sight
  • Let’s you record your drone while it’s in flight through the front-facing camera
  • Great visibility in sunlight conditions
  • It utilizes an Android-based system

Price

Well, this could be counted as one of its key setbacks. You will have to part with nearly $700 to lay your hand on this unit. But before you argue that some drones cost a lot cheaper than that, look at the magic the smart glasses are able to perform.

Verdict

Epson has no doubt taken wearable tech to a whole new level. Drone flying experience, as we know it, can only be made better when you have on the Moverio BT-300FPV Smart Glasses. They do a lot more than the typical FPV glasses and even though they come at a relatively high price, you get value for your money.
